Pool Heaters

When it comes to swimming pool, one can never have enough luxury especially during the winter season. Pool heaters come in handy during this cold season as they help to make the pool warm and inviting all the time. In this way, one won’t have to miss out a single day of swimming due to cold pool temperatures. There are numerous types of swimming pool heaters available each with their own individual benefits and disadvantages.

The main types of pool heaters include gas heaters, oil fired heaters, as well as special pool heaters such as heat pumps and solar blankets.

Different Types of Pool Heaters

Gas heaters are quite common and use Natural gas or Propane to provide heat to the pool. In most cases, the use of Natural Gas is considered to be somewhat cheaper than other available methods. The gas heater works through burner elements whereby the flame of gas generated is used to heat up metal exchange tubes through which pool water runs. Therefore, as water is filtered through your pool it picks up heat as it runs along the exchange tube. Gas efficiency in heating pool water averages about 83% with some high efficiency heaters heating up to 95% efficiency.

The oil fired heater uses oil to produce the flame used to heat up the exchange tube. With this type of heater, safety precautions have to be performed to prevent excessive variations in the temperature of the water as well as the flow of water. As all machines come with these precautions, the oil fired heater is considerably more expensive than the gas heater.

Electric Heaters
uses electrical resistance to heat up pool water. These types of pool heaters are mostly used in large spas. The popularity of this type of heater is limited due to the very high cost of electricity required to heat up the water and this is why it is commonly found in spas only. Moreover, the amount of water heated per unit time is exceedingly small when compared to the amount of electricity used.

Special Types of Pool Heaters

The heat pump is a special type of pool heater that is normally used to heat and cool homes. Unlike normal heaters, heat pumps function through transferring heat from one place to the other. This is done through a compressor which heats and compresses outside air and transfers the heat to the heat exchanger whereby the heat is transferred to the pool water as it flows by. This cycle is repeated over and over again until a suitable temperature has been reached. In terms of effectiveness, the heat pump is much more effective than the electric heater and helps save one quite a lot of money when used on a regular basis.

The solar blanket is a special type of pump that functions through minimizing the heat lost by the water in the pool. Moreover, the blanket traps the heat from the sun’s rays in a similar fashion to greenhouses. The solar blanket has numerous sealed air pouches which effectively allow for heat to build up within the bubble. When the blanket is placed over the pool, the heat trapped within the bubble is transferred to the pool water. This process is further enhanced when used with the gas or oil fired pool heaters as you cannot always s depend on the sun’s appearance to warm your pool. As solar blankets minimize evaporation rates, these type of pool heaters also have the added advantage of minimizing pool costs in terms of money spent on chemicals as well as money spent on fuel to drive the heating process.
